When Should Parents Start Brushing Baby Teeth?

Dental care should begin as soon as the first baby tooth appears.

Use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush appropriate for your child’s age. A small amount of fluoride toothpaste may be recommended, with the amount depending on the child’s age and ability to spit.

Young children do not have the dexterity to brush thoroughly on their own, so parents should perform or closely supervise brushing.

Baby teeth may be temporary, but they are important for eating, speech development, appearance, and maintaining space for permanent teeth. Cavities in baby teeth can cause pain and infection and may require dental treatment.

Daily oral care also helps establish routines that children can carry into adulthood.

If you are unsure how much toothpaste to use or how to brush your child’s teeth effectively, ask your dental team for guidance.
