Why Do My Gums Hurt When I Floss?

If your gums are tender or bleed when you floss, it may be tempting to stop cleaning between your teeth.

However, inflammation caused by plaque accumulation is a common reason gums become sensitive during flossing. Consistent but gentle interdental cleaning can be an important part of improving gum health.

Technique also matters. Snapping floss forcefully into the gums can cause unnecessary trauma. Instead, guide the floss gently between the teeth and curve it around each tooth surface.

If you are beginning a new flossing routine, mild tenderness may improve as gum health improves. Persistent pain, significant bleeding, swelling, or discomfort in one specific area should be evaluated.

Some people find interdental brushes or other cleaning tools easier to use than traditional floss.

At Port Moody Smile Dental, our dental hygienists can help you find an interdental cleaning method that works for your mouth and demonstrate proper technique during your next cleaning.
