Fillings can become loose or fall out for several reasons.
The filling itself may have fractured, the surrounding tooth may have broken, or new decay may have developed underneath or around the restoration. Heavy biting forces or teeth grinding can also contribute.
If a filling falls out, the exposed tooth may become sensitive to temperature, sweets, or pressure.
Keep the area clean and avoid chewing hard foods on the affected tooth until it can be examined. Do not attempt to permanently repair the tooth yourself using household adhesives.
Even if the tooth does not hurt, it should be assessed because leaving it exposed may allow additional damage to occur.
Treatment depends on how much healthy tooth remains. The tooth may be restored with another filling, a crown, or a different treatment depending on the extent of the problem.
