Does Coffee Stain Your Teeth?

Coffee can contribute to surface staining of natural teeth over time.

The pigments in coffee can adhere to tooth surfaces, particularly when coffee is consumed frequently. Tea, red wine, tobacco, and certain foods can also contribute to extrinsic staining.

Regular brushing can help manage some surface stains, but aggressive brushing is not recommended because it can damage teeth and gums.

Professional dental cleaning may remove certain external stains that do not respond well to home care.

If you want to brighten the underlying colour of your natural teeth, professional whitening may be another option. However, crowns, veneers, and fillings generally will not whiten in the same way.

Reducing how long coffee remains in contact with your teeth and rinsing with water afterward may help minimize staining.

If tooth discolouration is bothering you, Port Moody Smile Dental can assess whether the colour change is primarily surface staining or something else and discuss appropriate cosmetic dental options.
