What Is a Cracked Tooth?

A cracked tooth can range from a small superficial line in the enamel to a deeper fracture affecting the internal structures of the tooth.

Symptoms vary. Some people experience sharp pain when biting, sensitivity to temperature, or discomfort that comes and goes. Others may have a visible crack without significant symptoms.

Cracks can develop from trauma, biting hard objects, large existing fillings, teeth grinding, or normal wear over time.

Treatment depends on the location and extent of the crack. Some teeth may be restored with bonding or a crown, while deeper cracks involving the dental pulp may require root canal treatment. In severe cases, a tooth may not be repairable.

Early assessment is important because cracks can sometimes progress.

If you suspect you have a cracked tooth, avoid chewing hard foods on that side and arrange a dental examination.
