Root canal treatment is used to treat certain problems involving the pulp, the soft tissue located inside a tooth.
The pulp can become inflamed or infected because of deep decay, cracks, trauma, or other damage. Symptoms may include persistent toothache, prolonged sensitivity, discomfort when biting, swelling, or changes in the surrounding gums. In some cases, there may be few noticeable symptoms.
During root canal treatment, the affected tissue is removed from inside the tooth. The internal spaces are then cleaned, disinfected, shaped, and sealed.
The goal is to preserve a natural tooth that might otherwise need to be removed.
After root canal treatment, the tooth may require a permanent restoration such as a crown depending on its condition and location.
If you have persistent dental pain or have been told you may need root canal treatment, Port Moody Smile Dental can assess the tooth and discuss appropriate treatment options.
