What Causes Bad Breath?

Everyone experiences bad breath occasionally, but persistent bad breath may be a sign that something needs attention.

Common causes include plaque buildup, food particles, bacteria on the tongue, dry mouth, smoking, certain foods, and gum disease. Cavities or dental infections may also contribute in some situations.

Improving your oral hygiene routine is a good starting point. Brush twice daily, clean between your teeth, and gently clean your tongue. Drinking water can also help if dry mouth is contributing to the problem.

However, mouthwash may only temporarily mask odour if there is an underlying dental or medical cause.

If bad breath continues despite good oral hygiene, consider discussing it with your dentist. A dental examination can help identify potential oral causes and determine whether further evaluation may be appropriate.

If persistent bad breath is affecting your confidence, Port Moody Smile Dental can assess your oral health and provide personalized recommendations.
